Hi, Sean, thank you for this thought-provoking comment. Your interest in how Old English language reflects the Anglo-Saxon world reminds me (and you likely already know) how the Anglo-Saxons reckoned time in "winters," as in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle when it is said that a certain king is "50 winters old." Anyway, your Heidegger quotation is profound. It reminds me of Marshall McLuhan's thoughts and books on technology. Thank you so much for sharing that Heidegger quotation with me; it certainly sheds further light on hale (and hal) for me. It provides much to consider there! Thank you again for the comment!

Carmen,
I'm delighted to find your entry which is more detailed than what my individual inquiry into hal led me to find. I am not educated in Old English, but I am a philosophy student and as such, understanding how, for example, Anglo-Saxons saw the world through their unique language that presented things to them in ways wholly different than our language presents them to us is important to me.

You may find this highly interesting. In a passage of Martin Heidegger's in which he is exposing the essence of technology as self-assertive willing he writes: "[Because of technology as self-assertive willing] not only does protection now withold itself from man, but the integralness of the whole of what is remains now in darkness. The wholesome and sound withdraws. The world becomes without healing, unholy. Not only does the holy, as the track to the godhead, thereby remain concealed, even the track to the holy, the hale and the whole, seems to be effaced." (From: What Are Poets For?)

Obviously Heidegger is in touch with the essential self-sameness of the words hale, whole, health and holy, i.e. hal (although he writes in German). Your suggestion that Savior and Christ also share in this self-sameness has shone even more light on the issue that Heidegger is writing about than he himself was able to get in touch with.

Thank you for your dilligent etymological work!

Jennifer, I am thankful to hear that your friend is enjoying the book. Please tell Lee I said, "Hello!" and that I send her prayers for blessings and thoughts of joy. Thank you and you all for welcoming me into Memphis. The community I experienced there was amazingly warm, and I felt God's spirit, too. It was such a blessing to be there. Peace to you, Carmen
