Shorter College Graduation Speaker

Dr. Carmen Acevedo Butcher

Commencement services this year for Shorter College graduates were held on Saturday, May 2nd, at 10:00 a.m. and at 2:00 p.m. in the Winthrop-King Centre (campus gymnasium). A member of the Shorter College faculty since 2002, Dr. Butcher currently serves as scholar-in-residence at the college’s Rome campus. In addition to teaching English courses, she is a prolific researcher and author.

Her recent publications include Man of Blessing: A Life of St. Benedict, which was released in March 2006 by Paraclete Press and reprinted in May 2006, and God of Mercy: Ælfric’s Sermons and Theology, which was released in 2006 by Mercer University Press. The book, Hildegard of Bingen: A Spiritual Reader, was released in Spring 2007 by Paraclete Press. Dr. Butcher’s book “A Lenten Journey: Stations of the Cross, with the Spiritual Classics” is also under contract with Paraclete Press. In addition, 2007 she published a number of poems and essays in collections and journals.

A graduate of Cherokee High School in Canton, Ga., Dr. Butcher earned her Bachelor of Arts degree (summa cum laude) from Shorter College with a major in English. She holds the Master of Arts in English and the Doctor of Philosophy in Medieval Studies (Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of Georgia. She was a Rotary Club International Graduate Scholar at Heidelberg University and a Fulbright Scholar at University College London. During the 2004-05 academic year, a Fulbright Scholars Program grant took her to Sogang University in Seoul, Korea, where she served as a visiting lecturer.
